FOR DOG'S EXACT NECK SIZE - You'll take the measurement at the center of the neck (at the Green Line).
FOR DOG'S HEAD CIRCUMFERENCE - You'll take the measurement at the largest point of your dog's skull, usually at the Pink line in the above graph.
For a proper fit, measure your dog’s neck with a cloth measuring tape. If you don't have a measuring tape, you can use a piece of string, which you can then lay out against a ruler.
Pull the tape right up to your dog's neck. There should be no room between the measuring tape and the neck, but don't pull the tape so tightly that you're choking the dog ;)
For thick-coated dogs, pull the tape through the coat and down to the dog's neck. For dogs with loose neck skin (Labradors, Newfie's, etc.), pull the tape through the loose skin a little bit. If you measure outside of the loose skin, the collar will probably be too big.
Remember that you're not measuring for the fit of the collar. We'll take care of that. The object here is to measure the dog's actual neck size.
| This is the proper way to take a neck measurement :)
The tape is pulled right up to Mija's neck with no slack. |
| Don't take too loose of a measurement.
Notice how there are two full fingers under the measuring tape? This will throw the sizing off by a couple of inches and the collar will be way too big. |
| Definitely allow for much silliness after the measuring process. Your dog deserves it for being so patient! |
